Its all black and white

Now I am unsure of what looks better, black or white frames? White looks cleaner and modern but black seems to bring out the colour of the paper.

First frame attempt

I made this little piece to go in our print auction. Had to paint the frame white because the original wood was a terrible colour, this is just to see what my pieces look like framed. I think it works well, it protects the print but also allows it to change in colour and curl over time.

Take My Card

Just a little experiment, thought I would try printing out a business card on to a small sheet of black and white paper. Very basic layout because I am really not sure how to go about designing a business card but it's pretty unique! The two photographs show its change in colour over a few minutes.

More Inspiration

Inspiration this time from Masao Yamamoto, the weathered quality to his photographs is really beautiful, my favourite image is the one at the top of the small bird. His approach to framing is great too, clusters of small images draw you in to look closely.

Framing Inspiration!

I need to start thinking seriously about how I am going to frame my final pieces (not that I know what they are going be yet though!) I really like Wolfgang Tillmans approach to framing because he seems to pick the right frame for the right picture or in some cases knows that no frame is even needed. For my own work I like the idea of having a large piece that is not framed and stuck to the wall somehow and a few smaller pieces that are framed. Lots of work still to do!

Sandbanks

It was a beautiful sunny day today so I cycled all the way to Sandbanks to make some very small work. This place holds a lot of significant memories for me so the work is very personal and therefore the smaller size works better.

experiments in circles

I won't disclose how I made these images because I think it will draw attention away from the aesthetics and I think they have a bit of mystery behind them!

Last Monday

Last week at Queens Park, not a great day for making work. I wasn't adventurous enough, just stayed in one spot, scared of moving around too much.

Torn

This was made by lightly pressing a torn sheet of unexposed paper up against the condensation on my window. The paper was from the batch of old stuff I bought on ebay and this sheet had already been torn by whoever the paper belonged to last. I like the idea that it already has someone elses trace on it, their fingers have touched and torn the paper leaving their marks on it's surface and I am adding my own marks to it now.

Found

I recently bought a load of old photographic paper off of ebay, in one of the packets was a handful of pictures of a woman many of which would be considered pornographic, I am not entirely sure from which time period they come from but they have obviously been forgotten about for a long time. I think this image is really beautiful, it is one of the less risque ones, some of the others are a bit crude though. A strange find!

Susan Derges

Today I contacted the Purdy Hicks gallery who represent Susan Derges to see if I can go and talk to her. I find her work pretty inspiring, seems there is a strong connection with nature which is really what I want to show in my own work. These pieces also seems to break that barrier between camera and subject, again a key point to my own work!

To Fix or Not to Fix?

I tried fixing one of my sheets of paper, didn't go exactly as I had planned! Instead of getting darker or staying the same colour as I had expected the paper became lighter and lighter as the fixer did its work and seemed to end up reverting back to it's original colour when it was first taken from the box. Then as it dried went a more pinky colour with purple tints at the edges.
I now have a battle in my head between fixing and allowing the paper to continue to change.

Re-visit

Today an epic 3 hour cycle around Bournemouth re-visiting the four trees I used in the negotiated practice project. This time armed with just one sheet of paper.
