AUCB Graduate Exhibition

Up goes the uni exhibition. This is one of my final pieces, Landscape, April 14. The piece is hung in a darker corner to allow a fairly slow change in colour over the period of the exhibition.

The Art of Cress

A, perhaps futile, attempt to grow cress on a sheet of fibre based photographic paper...... needless to say it did not work. Nothing for the seeds to anchor their little roots in and the paper dried up too quickly.
The seeds are now stuck to the paper, unable to carry on growing but now a part of something else.....

One More...

Last Thursday, the day before my hand-in, I took one more early morning trip to Queens Park with a couple of rolls of paper. The forest looked particularly green on that morning, as the top photo shows. I chose a different spot, good to work in, although I was confronted by a very small but very angry jack russell!

Sand Cloud

Some very tiny work, I think this is the smallest piece I have ever made, its a 2.5x2.5 inch square from a box of old Kodak paper I recently bought on eBay.
On Monday I went for an early morning cycle to Branksome Beach and took an assortment of paper with me. I took two long strips and wove them around the rocks and the sand. I also took some different sheets of old fibre-based paper including these small ones. The change in colour on the small ones happened very fast despite it being a cloudy day, they went from a bright white to a brilliant pink right before my eyes.

Back to Hengistbury Head

Another trip to Hengistbury Head today, it was raining unfortunately which is not so good when trying to work with a piece of paper that is twice the size of you but I had some help from a lovely friend! I took two sheets out that were about 4 - 5 metres long and a couple of thin strips about the same length. Some really nice colours on the paper today and a good spot to work despite the hundreds of mosquitos!!

New Business Cards

I had some business cards printed the other day. I used details from three of my prints, each using a different element of nature, rain, sea, and earth. The only problem: forgot to put my email address on! I did put my website on and my email can be found there so its not a complete disaster.

Daro Montag

A good person for inspiration for my own work, Daro Montag buries film and leaves it to decompose and be attacked by 'mirco-organisims'. He then digs the film up, allows to dry and makes these beautiful photographs from the 'negative'. The work seems more based around science than my work but I really like his ideas around knowing the earth and soil in the place that you are in.

Boscombe Exhibition

Photos from the exhibition yesterday. It was a great day, really sunny so lots of people came down. The work I exhibited was all made was created on the beach at Boscombe so it was really the perfect place to show them. I didn't sell any unfortunately but quite a lot of people asked how they were made etc and seemed interested. I think the framed pieces seem to look the best but the clear pins I used to display the rest also worked really well.

Prep for Saturday's Exhibition

Spent most of today setting up for the exhibition in Boscombe on Saturday that I am showing work in. Its been a very busy week and hopefully I'll be able to relax a little on Saturday and maybe sell some work! More and better quality photos to come soon.

Blood Red.....Sun

Arose at 6am this morning and walked with my big rolls of paper to Queens Park again. A remarkable sunrise, absolutely stunning. The black and white paper seemed to do almost the opposite of what it did last time, the background went a slightly pink colour while the marks made by the crushed leaves turned blue. I also tried the same with a large sheet of colour paper, not quite as good as the black and white but some marks appeared.

Blood Red.....Pictures

An Original Lucy Reynolds Print!

Size Matters

An early start, 7:30am at Queens Park. Working on a very large scale again, this time without the destructive wind. Some beautiful marks on the paper made by damp leaves from the undergrowth of the forest.

Its all black and white

Now I am unsure of what looks better, black or white frames? White looks cleaner and modern but black seems to bring out the colour of the paper.

First frame attempt

I made this little piece to go in our print auction. Had to paint the frame white because the original wood was a terrible colour, this is just to see what my pieces look like framed. I think it works well, it protects the print but also allows it to change in colour and curl over time.

Take My Card

Just a little experiment, thought I would try printing out a business card on to a small sheet of black and white paper. Very basic layout because I am really not sure how to go about designing a business card but it's pretty unique! The two photographs show its change in colour over a few minutes.

More Inspiration

Inspiration this time from Masao Yamamoto, the weathered quality to his photographs is really beautiful, my favourite image is the one at the top of the small bird. His approach to framing is great too, clusters of small images draw you in to look closely.

Framing Inspiration!

I need to start thinking seriously about how I am going to frame my final pieces (not that I know what they are going be yet though!) I really like Wolfgang Tillmans approach to framing because he seems to pick the right frame for the right picture or in some cases knows that no frame is even needed. For my own work I like the idea of having a large piece that is not framed and stuck to the wall somehow and a few smaller pieces that are framed. Lots of work still to do!

Paper Destruction

Taking a huge roll of photographic paper to Hengistbury Head to be destroyed by wind with my two assistants
